Ottawa Water Birth at Home | Learn Birth Photography
Photographing a home water birth in Ottawa.
Hello Doulas, water birth is a photographer's dream and a technical puzzle. The light bounces off the surface. There's movement and waves. The colours are rich and deep. Baby is born into the water, and often there's a stillness that is so unique to water birth. As a doula, you are already familiar with these moments. Learning to photograph them is a whole other layer. Using your cell or a fancy-pants camera - these are skills you can learn. Having photographed water births across Ottawa and Gatineau for years, it would be a joy to share some tips and ways to create beautiful water birth images with you at the next birth photography for doulas workshop.
Until then, please enjoy these images from a home water birth.
I facilitate doulas and birth workers BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS a few times a year at my new location, 40 minutes from Ottawa. Imagine a retreat-like day learning how to create beautiful birth images.
“I did it, I did it!” she sang.
Yes, you did!
This is my friend of many years - we had our babies at the same time and were neighbours and spend hours walking with our babies on our backs in Vanier. Those times were key in our sense of community as new moms back then and I was so grateful to photograph and film the birth of her third at home.
She rocked and swayed and danced as baby made her way down - and when the pool was filled she settled in to the pool. She trusted her body and moved in ways that her body and baby called for. The room was very dark but a few dim lamps and the light from the hallway.
Her midwife knit and checked in when needed and was there as she was born into her mom’s arms - it was a beautiful, calm, joyous birth!
